Archive of Victorian Translations from Asia and their Readership

Project title:

AVaTAR: Archive of Victorian Translations from Asia and their Readership

“The creation of a public resource…opening up to users the remarkable diversity of intercultural encounters sustained by the reading habits of adventurous Victorians.”

Researcher:

Dr Alexander Bubb

School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Centre for Inclusive Humanities

University of Roehampton

Project proposal:

This project has involved the creation of a public resource to bring AVaTAR to everyone, opening up to users the remarkable diversity of intercultural encounters sustained by the reading habits of adventurous Victorians. A descriptive and photographic online catalogue has been developed, available as an open resource, with a paper presented in September 2023 to publicise the website. It is intended, too, to engage local audiences at Roehampton through an exhibition in the university library.
