Project proposal:
This workshop-based project builds on Dr Federica Frabetti expertise in engaging marginalised stakeholders, often possessing a low level of visual and digital skills, in creative practices using multimedia platforms that contribute to their upskilling, wellbeing and social integration. It also builds on work already undertaken by Dr Mark Riley for a charity based in East London called East London Cares. These workshops are designed to encourage community engagement by asking members of the local community to participate in storytelling activities using “evocative objects”. Such objects are meaningful physical symbols— something that “speaks”, reaches out, and heals. They are personal objects to which we attach stories and memories. Taken together, the objects, the memories, and the stories take the owners and viewers on a journey that strengthens mutual understanding and sense of belonging. The planned workshops will take place on the Alton Estate, Roehampton. They will involve Roehampton staff, students and an independent artist working with an intergenerational group of different ethnical backgrounds to record and document objects and stories; to develop digital, visual, and audio material to present as a community-curated exhibition and website; to develop of a toolkit for running similar community-led events in the future.
