A Mobile App for Disabled Youth in Nigeria

Project title:

A Mobile App for Disabled Youth in Offa Community, Kwara State, Nigeria

“This [project] focuses on the practical development and implementation of the Empowering Abilities app. Its primary objective is to empower disabled youths in Offa.”

Researcher:

Project proposal:

The project aim is to develop a pilot ‘Empowering Abilities’ app to support the unique challenges faced by disabled youth in Offa, Nigeria. The core focus is on individuals between 18 and 45, as they often form the backbone of community activities, development initiatives, community affairs, such as local governance, social activities, and economic endeavours, contributing significantly to the local economy and social fabric. Engaging them gives a better chance of implementing sustainable development projects that benefit the entire community.

The objective is to scale up initial pilot surveys conducted across 10 disabled youths. The essence is to co-develop user research with the participation of 65 already identified disabled youths through structured interviews, focus groups and workshops.

Research findings, based on users’ needs and preferences, will be used to inform app development of the Empowering Abilities app, going beyond generic offerings, providing:

  • Culturally relevant content and interface.
  • Addressing local language, customs, and preferences.
  • Accessibility features: ensuring inclusivity for diverse disabilities.
  • Locally focused resources: connecting users to relevant support services and opportunities.
  • Emphasis on social inclusion: Fostering a supportive community within the app.

Content creation will involve educators, disability advocates, and subject matter experts to develop high-quality, engaging educational materials ranging from senior high school subjects to college, polytechnics and university modules tailored to the specific needs and learning styles of disabled youth. Interactive learning modules, tutorials, quizzes, and multimedia resources will promote knowledge acquisition and skill development.

The project includes targeted marketing to reach the Offa community via local organisations, community leaders, and influencers, which will maximize app awareness and adoption.

Disabled youth will be actively involved throughout the process, from research and design to co-creation and testing. This ensures the app truly meets their needs and preferences. Collaboration with local disability organisations and leaders will further enrich the app’s cultural relevance and effectiveness.

Extensive testing with disabled youth and relevant stakeholders will ensure the app meets usability and accessibility standards. Feedback will be used to identify and address any issues before launch.

The primary objective is to empower disabled youths in Offa through technology, education, and social inclusion.
